‘Flamingo’ is a glorious collection of 11 tracks, resonating with complex pop unspooling, vast lyrical scope and the confident animation of a world lit with familiar dreams and desires. A striking follow up to the debut ‘Self Talk’, an album that was nominated for an ARIA award, J Award for Best Video, shortlisted in the Australian Music Prize and selected as triple j feature album. Olivia Bartley, creative force behind the project, co-produced the upcoming album with long-time collaborator Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, DMAs).

“The record explores how grief and desire are intertwined. It’s referencing a personal tragedy – the addiction and loss of someone very close to me,” says Bartley. “But it’s not a project of catharsis – I chose to submit myself to this experience because I wanted to create from inside it, rather than explaining it. I’ve tried to borrow from my own grief to create its inverse: something joyous. Something beyond myself, something fantastic -something new”.

“It’s the most personal I’ve ever been, but also the most confident. This album is a force.”

Taking the stage as a curtain raiser for ‘Flamingo’ is brand new track ‘Hounds’, a shimmering, kaleidoscopic requiem about calling someone out on their bullshit, or rather, what it means to be human; to feel and to evolve.

This song is pure emotional force. A compelling journey from the first beat which drives to ever-escalating releases within the song. Lyrics are immediate, addressing someone driven by dissatisfaction, chasing something they can’t name even to themselves: ’Your reinventions endless, I’ll keep belief suspended’; trying out multiple versions of themselves as though magic tricks: ‘Walking on water, cut in half’; and someone who falls for everything, they could even ‘drown in the sun’. The listener is rewarded at each lift within the song, as Bartley demonstrates masterful pop sensibility. Sonically we hear a deft balancing act between moments that touch on nostalgia, even facetious sonic hints at religiosity, with elements that are startlingly unique and their own.

‘Hounds’ is lush and imaginative, belying its rage. The intent behind chorus line ‘I just released a single hound’, on par with TV on the Radio’s ‘Wolf Like Me’, or the Walkmen’s ‘The Rat’. Instinctive, emotional and high energy. ‘Hounds’ follows singles ‘Shoot to Forget’ & ‘Star City’ which have made an immediate imprint on the international music community with airplay on Radio 1, BBC 6, a number of high profile international playlist additions, airplay on triple j, double j and community radio nationally.

Come Back 03:47
Ahh~ I walk along the side of the road the party debris the shimmering mess releases I flicker there in the pieces We’re tied to each other lantana licks the chain link outside her house, the lights are on I’m waiting for dreams to fade I’ll never get used to it aware of the cold that we made, you trying to e-scape it come to me like a song come to me like you mean it like you were here all along come to me now i need you (heart, heart it will ache) heart it will ache (I’m undone, come back) Come back, come back I need you ahh~ postcard destination for honeymooners and jumpers deliver me the prodigal let tomorrow be possible lonely prayers like pills dissolve under the tongue and shrug into your resolve These things that we do to get by we invent, and we pretend will you ever change your mind? I’m not ready for the end come to me like a song come to me like you mean it like there is nothing wrong come to me now cause I need you I need you (what, what’s left to take?) What’s left to take? (come unpack, come back) come back. come back, I need you Ahh~ come to me like a song come to me like you mean it like the devil is gone come to me I still need you I still need you (I, I can’t exist) I can’t exist (two places, come back) Come back, come back I need you (whatever you did) Whatever you did (lie to me, come back) Come back, come back I need you.

Windows ache with race calls where there’s risk there’s luck trapped in circles can’t be fixed or touched charmed by these invitations these impossible worlds, these invisible horses Leaves us nervous riders nervous riders ooh- what would you say if I let you speak? I let you call my bluff the phone rings on faith slips and dives It’s not the fall that hurts But what could I be compared to these worlds these invisible horses Leaves us nervous riders nervous riders

Hides behind the camera So he can Shoot to forget I was just a postcard from the gift shop Left by a tourist And I’ve spent this long trying to pretend That love don’t exist do, do, do I worry bout it do, do, do I worry bout it Found an old photo of you in a suitcase Words stuck in the throat Gotta keep this little heart of mine Full of air afloat And there is no need to learn to swim, the Beach boys have life boats do, do, do I worry bout it do, do, do I worry bout it I try To forget Reach for the bright blue There’s glass you break through To let go But the bird Already Hit window Radio aches with that song we used to sing Lovely little melody If there were still a possibility There’d be no tunes and no me But I would’ve given it all up for Your love, your jealousy do, do, do I worry bout it do, do, do I worry bout it I try To forget Reach for the bright blue There’s glass you break through To let go But the bird Already Hit window

Been a while we were in love won’t forget the feeling of you leavin’ never really left I was more than enough now hours fly by full of waiting for the staying there is no rest First you leave Then you go Who will you be? How will I know? In the city through wet dark yeah I heard you're a star to somebody No I’m not gonna to beg I can’t shake it I still hear your shadow humming that is the cost of believing, come Just come and run your hand down my legs First you leave Then you go Who will you be? How will I know? You tear up at the memories no matter that it isn’t real the bubbles in your blood are sinking First you leave Then you go Who will you be? How will I know?

Flamingo 03:12
You keep changing your address new move every misstep wet arrows on your skin crying all night at pain within don’t know if you’re chasing or running Saw you go walk into a drink and disappear follow me follow me afraid trouble finds you bad idea Last I seen was a photograph you half boy, half cigarette ash how much can a person change under this weight, still stay the same who you see when you look in the mirror, is it you? we don’t want it to be true follow me follow me afraid trouble finds you bad idea restless cities don’t know, don’t know why they’re hurting restless cities don’t know, don’t know why they’re burning restless cities don’t know, don’t know that I love you restless cities don’t know, don’t know why they’re hurting

Wrong Number 03:31
Must be the wrong number of an ordinary man all the things you should’ve known now you want to get high and forget city, ocean, dial tone the silence it spreads between us, and You keep running to your burning house you do it to, you do it to yourself There’s so much to remember promises shot through with doubt you don’t need to give me answers just send me the mountains you dream about You keep running to your burning house you do it to, you do it to yourself And I’m waiting for the call We invent and we eavesdrop Waiting for the fall You keep running to your burning house you do it to, you do it to yourself you keep holding a flame to your heart And I do it too do it to myself
